Biography

 Sonnekai (gold) are the youngest generation Reinhardt and Rosenberg: rising stars in the Django Reinhardt-tradition. Sonnekai are: Wattie Rosenberg (violin), Fremdo Rosenberg (double bass), Faifie Reinhardt (lead guitar) and Daniël Rosenberg (rhythm guitar).At the age of just 15, violinist Wattie Rosenberg formed the group Sonnekai. Within one year, they recorded their first album “Sonnekai”, coached and supervised by Hans Meelen, the discoverer of the famous The Rosenberg Trio, in the studio of Jon Larsen, owner of Hot Club Records in Norway.
Sonnekai played at the Dutch official première of the movie ‘Swing’ by Tony Gatlif. The well-known guitarist Tchavolo Schmidt (leading character in the movie) was very enthusiastic about this youthful ensemble. Violinist Wattie Rosenberg effortlessly knows how to use the vibrato. He regularly plays as a guest violinist in several other ensembles such as with The Rosenberg Trio. When Faifie Reinhardt is playing his guitar you can hear the influence of the Belgium sinto-guitarplayer Django Reinhardt. In his solos he quotes citations of the original solo as played by the legend Django Reinhardt. Also the influence of Stochelo Rosenberg, the famousleadguitarist of The Rosenberg Trio, is unmistakable. Just listen to the typical vibrato-sound of Faifies guitarplaying. Fremdo Rosenberg who is the youngest band member is a virtuoso on the bass. He creates a steamy swing that is typical to the Gipsy-jazz-swing. Daniël Rosenberg is the latest addition to the group. His firm, steady and characteristic rhythm strokes, create space and allow Wattie and Faifie to launch their solos, individual, simultaneously or even duelling. Daniël was taught how to play the guitar by Nous’che Rosenberg, rhythmguitar player of The Rosenberg Trio.
Sonnekai are a young and dynamic group, who look very fresh and energetic on stage. The music of Sonnekai is deeply rooted in the tradition of the Sinti of making music but with a very modern sound. No matter how introvert the Sinti-musicians of Sonnekai seem to be with their music they can express their feelings; then their hearts speak out. Together they form a solid unity.
In 2009 their long awaited third album was released on the new label owned by Sinti Music, Sinti Music Records.

Sonnekai (‘goud’) de jongste generatie Reinhardt en Rosenberg: rijzende sterren in de Django-traditie. Wattie Rosenberg (viool), Fremdo Rosenberg (contrabas), Faifie Reinhardt (sologitaar), Daniël Rosenberg (ritme gitaar).Reeds op 15-jarige leeftijd richtte violist Wattie Rosenberg (zoon van Bakro Rosenberg (samen met zijn broer Häntsje Rosenberg oprichter van de groep Romanesj)) de groep Sonnekai op. Binnen een jaar werd al hun eerste album “Sonnekai” opgenomen onder begeleiding van ontdekker van The Rosenberg Trio, Hans Meelen, in de studio van Jon Larsen, eigenaar van Hot Club Records in Noorwegen. Sonnekai speelde bij de Nederlandse première van de film “Swing” van Tony Gatlif. De bekende gitarist Tchavolo Schmitt (hoofdpersoon in de film) was laaiend enthousiast over dit jeugdige ensemble.

Violist Wattie Rosenberg weet moeiteloos gebruik te maken van het vibrato. Hij speelt regelmatig als gast-violist bij diverse andere ensembles. Onlangs nog met The Rosenberg Trio. Bij gitarist Faifie Reinhardt hoor je ook de grote invloed van Belgische sinto-gitarist Django Reinhardt. In zijn solo’s haalt hij citaten aan uit de originele zoals de legende Django Reinhardt die speelde. Faifie is vooral geïnspireerd door zijn oom Lulu Reinhardt, de legendarische sologitarist van het Titi Winterstein Quintett. Daarnaast is de invloed van Stochelo Rosenberg, de fameuze sologitarist van TheRosenberg Trio, ook duidelijk aanwezig. Dit is dan ook te horen aan het typische vibrato in het gitaarspel van Faifie. Fremdo Rosenberg, de jongste in het gezelschap, die virtuoos de bas bespeelt is tevens de stuwende kracht die maakt dat de begeleiding swingt als een trein waardoor de typische Gipsy-jazz-swing wordt gecreëerd. Daniël Rosenberg in de nieuwe aanwinst voor de groep. Zijn strakke karakteristieke ritmeslag geeft Wattie en Faifie alle ruimte om individueel, simultaan dan wel duellerend te soleren. Daniël heeft de gitaar leren bespelen van Nous’che Rosenberg, ritmegitarist van The Rosenberg Trio.
Sonnekai is een jonge en dynamische groep die voortkomt uit een duidelijke Sinti-traditie met een heel eigentijds geluid. Hoe introvert de Sinti-musici van Sonnekai ook lijken in hun muziek kunnen ze hun gevoelens uiten; dan spreekt hun hart. Samen vormen ze een rotsvaste eenheid. In 2009 verscheen hun langverwachte derde album verschijnen op het nieuwe label van Sinti Music: Sinti Music Records.
