Introduction
The Dutch Sinto composer, Roger ‘Moreno’ Rathgeb, has composed a Requiem for Auschwitz; a Requiem for all the victims of the Nazi-regime.
The International Gipsy Festival Tilburg took the initiative to perform this Requiem in as many European countries as possible.
Since 1997, the International Gipsy Festival in Tilburg organizes an annual festival where many musicians perform from all over Europe, predominantly musicians of Sinti and Roma origin. It shows the impact of this interesting culture on other European art forms such as classical music, jazz, popmusic, folk- music, drama, dance, and the visual arts.
Roger ‘Moreno’ Rathgeb is a musician. He is, as are many Sinti musicians, an autodidact. At a stage in his life when he was already an established musician, he has taught himself how to make staff-notations, and started composing. Some years ago, he made up his mind to compose a Requiem for the victims of Auschwitz. That is a daunting task: a composition of sixty minutes for symphony orchestra, choir, and soloists. He started to work on it, but when he visited Auschwitz, the emotions swelling up were too painful and that caused a severe writer’s block.
At the end of 2007, the International Gipsy Festival asked him to complete his composition with the aim of performing the work in several European cities. This request both encouraged and inspired him. In May 2009, he was able to finish his Requiem.
The piece has been appraised by expert composers and orchestra directors, among others Jean Lambrechts (Belgium), Riccardo Sahiti (Germany), Jeff Hamburg (USA) and Jirí Stárek (Czech Republic). They also removed some imperfections. They all are very enthusiastic about the quality of the piece and are convinced it merits performance.
Objective
The Requiem has been composed by a Sinto musician; however, it should become a monument to all the victims of Auschwitz. Specifically, we are aiming to stimulate a memorial of the Nazi genocide shared by Jewish and Roma/ Sinti organizations, in the European countries in which the concert will take place.
Around 500,000 Roma and Sinti were murdered by the Nazis; this part of their history is hardly known among the public at large. The Roma and Sinti are the largest minority in the European Union and are currently victims of serious discrimination, deportations, killings, and pogroms in many countries.
The Requiem would like to bring about a dialogue between all European ethnic groups, and strives to prompt governments to improve their policies regarding minorities in general and Roma and Sinti in particular. The Requiem for Auschwitz is a powerful statement about human suffering.
Aims
An enrichment of the European culture by performing this Requiem by musicians from as many European countries as possible;
Adding a new – musical – dimension to keeping alive the memorial of Auschwitz in as many European countries as possible;
Acquiring a broader basis for the memorial of Auschwitz. Jewish and Roma and Sinti organizations, and other relevant organizations support the performance of the concert in their respective countries;
By connecting the experiences of the Nazi genocide on Roma and Sinti and the increasing hatred and racism against Roma and Sinti in present-day Europe, it becomes clear why Roma and Sinti have to permanently take account of the threats and persecutions. Activities around the concert, such as exhibitions, a Roma documentary festival, meetings about the current situation of Roma and Sinti in Europe, will underline this continuity.
The collaboration between several Roma and Sinti communities will be promoted;
The cooperation and dialogue between Jewish and Roma and Sinti organizations will be stimulated;
The respect for Roma and Sinti as the greatest minority in Europe will be fostered.
Execution of the project
The project will be executed in the capitals of Poland, Romania, Hungary, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and in Frankfurt am Main.
The orchestral part of the piece will be performed by the “Roma und Sinti Philharmoniker in Frankfurt am Main”, the only philharmonic orchestra in Europe consisting of seventy-five professional Sinti and Roma musicians from Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Romania. The Orchestra’s director is Riccardo M. Sahiti, who is himself Roma and a lecturer at the Academy of Arts in Frankfurt. The choirs and the solo singers will be sought in the countries where the piece will be performed.
The Requiem will be divided into three pieces. In the breaks between the pieces, well-known musicians, poets, and actors – representing all victims of the Nazi terror - from the participating countries will bring short songs, poems, and performances related to the content of the Requiem, accompanied by photo and video projections.
The opening performance will be in Amsterdam on the 3rd of May 2012. In the same week an international conference will take place organized in close cooperation with the NIOD and the Anne Frank House on the Nazi genocide on Roma and Sinti as well as on their persecution in present-day Europe. In the other countries the project will be executed in from May until October 2012.
Organization structure
Foundation Alfa/The International Gipsy Festival Tilburg, The Netherlands is initiator, and has the lead and final responsibility of the project. It is also responsible for the implementation of the project in the Netherlands.
The International Gipsy Festival Tilburg already made partnership agreements with:
- Slovo 21, Khamoro World Roma Festival for the Czech Republic;
- The Roma People Association for Poland;
- The Romedia Foundation for Hungary;
- The National Centre for Roma Culture Romano Kher for Romania;
- The Philharmonische Verein, the Förderverein Roma, and the Central Rat für Deutsche Sinti und Roma.
The partners are responsible for the organizational and logistical aspects of the concert in their respective countries. They try to realize the above mentioned aims in their country with the support of relevant organizations and institutions in their own country.
Until now the following persons offered their name for an International Recommendation Committee:
- Václav Havel, former President of the Czech Republic;
- Lászlo Andor, member of the European Commission, responsible for Labour Affairs and minorities;
- Valeriu Nicolae, director of Policy Centre for Roma and other minorities (Bucharest);
- Ian Hancock, director of the Program of Romani Studies and the Romani Archives and Documentation Center at the University of Texas at Austin.
The Anne Frank House is preparing, especially for this project, a travelling exhibition on Roma and Sinti during the Holocaust and in present-day Europe, as seen with the eyes of children.
The International Auschwitz Committee as well as the Jehudi Menuhin Foundation warmly recommends the project. Institutions such as the Open Society Institute (Hungary), the Jewish Museum in Prague, the National Agency for Roma (Romania), and many Roma and Sinti organizations offered their expert advice and assistance to make the project a success in their respective countries.
The Requiem project already received the full financial support by the European Culture Program and the International Task Force for Coordination on Holocaust Remembrance, Education and Research. We are still campaigning to cover the total costs by approaching national and international donors.

Inleiding
De Nederlandse Sinto Roger ‘Moreno’ Rathgeb heeft een Requiem voor Auschwitz gecomponeerd; een Requiem voor alle slachtoffers van het nazi regime.
Het International Gipsy Festival te Tilburg heeft het initiatief genomen om dit Requiem in zoveel mogelijk Europese landen uit te voeren.
Sinds 1997 organiseert het International Gipsy Festival jaarlijks een festival waarbij vele artiesten en kunstenaars uit heel Europa betrokken zijn, onderwie de meeste van Sinti en Roma afkomst. Het laat daarbij de invloed zien die deze belangwekkende cultuur heeft op andere Europese kunstuitingen zoals klassieke muziek, jazz, popmuziek, volksmuziek, theater, dans en beeldende kunst.
Roger ‘Moreno’ Rathgeb is muzikant. Hij is, zoals veel Sintimuzikanten, autodidact maar heeft zich op latere leeftijd het notenschrift eigen gemaakt en is eigen stukken gaan componeren. Hij heeft zich een aantal jaren geleden voorgenomen een Requiem voor de slachtoffers van Auschwitz te schrijven. Dat is geen sinecure: een compositie van 60 minuten voor symphonieorkest, koor en solisten. Een aantal jaren geleden is hij er aan begonnen, maar een reis naar Auschwitz heeft hem emotioneel teveel pijn gedaan en een zware blokkade opgeworpen.
Het International Gipsy Festival heeft hem eind 2007 gevraagd om zijn compositie af te maken met als doel deze uiteindelijk ook uit te gaan voeren in verschillende Europese steden. Deze vraag heeft hem goed gedaan en nieuwe inspiratie opgeleverd. Half 2009 heeft hij het Requiem kunnen voltooien.
Het stuk is door deskundige componisten en orkestleiders (o.a. Jean Lambrechts [Be], Riccardo Sahiti [Dui]), Jeff Hamburg (USA) van commentaar voorzien en van onvolkomenheden ontdaan. Zij zijn zeer enthousiast over de kwaliteit van het werk en vinden het zeker uitvoerbaar.

He is, like many Sinti musicians, self-taught. He has proposed several years ago to write a requiem for the victims of Auschwitz. It is not easy: a composition for symphony orchestra of 60 minutes, choir and soloists. Several years ago he got started, but a trip to Auschwitz has hurt him emotionally too heavy and a blockade raised. The International Gypsy Festival asked him late 2007 to finish his composition with the intention of eventually going to perform the ruquiem in several European cities. This question has done him good and brought new inspiration.
Doelstelling
Het Requiem is gecomponeerd door een Sinti muzikant, maar moet een monument worden voor alle slachtoffers van Auschwitz.
We willen stimuleren dat de herdenking van Auschwitz meer gemeenschappelijk plaatsvindt; d.w.z. dat Joodse, Roma en Sinti organisaties en andere organisaties van nazislachtoffers meer gezamenlijk optrekken. Meer dan 500.000 Roma en Sinti zijn door de nazi’s vermoord; het is nog steeds het vergeten deel van de Holocaust.
De Roma en Sinti vormen op dit moment de grootste minderheid in Europa en worden in veel, met name Oost-Europese landen, nog steeds zwaar gediscrimineerd. Het Requiem wil een dialoog tot stand brengen tussen alle Europese bevolkingsgroepen en hoopt regeringen er toe te brengen hun beleid t.a.v. minderheidsgroepen in het algemeen en die van de Roma in het bijzonder in gunstige zin te wijzigen. Het muziekstuk is een krachtig statement tegen menselijk lijden.
Meer specifiek willen we bereiken:
Een verrijking van de Europese cultuur door dit Requiem voor Auschwitz te laten uitvoeren door musici uit zoveel mogelijk Europese landen;
Het voegt een nieuwe dimensie – een muzikale – toe aan het levend houden van de Auschwitz herdenking in zoveel mogelijk Europese landen;
Er komt een breder draagvlak voor de herdenking van Auschwitz. Joodse, Roma en Sinti organisaties en andere relevante organisaties ondersteunen de uitvoering van het concert in de diverse landen;
Door de verbinding te maken tussen de Holocaustervaringen en de toenemende gevoelens van haat en racisme tegenover Roma en Sinti in het huidige Europa wordt duidelijker waarom Roma en Sinti voordurend rekening moeten houden met bedreigingen en vervolging. Activiteiten rondom het concert zoals een tentoonstelling of een Roma documentaire festival, debatten maken deze relatie duidelijk;
De samenwerking tussen de diverse Roma en Sinti gemeenschappen wordt versterkt;
De samenwerking en dialoog tussen Joodse en Roma en Sinti organisaties wordt gestimuleerd;
Het respect voor Roma en Sinti als de grootste minderheid in Europa zal toenemen.
Uitvoering
Het werk zal uitgevoerd worden door het Orkest van de Philharmonischer Verein der Sinti und Roma uit Frankfurt am Main [Dui], het enige filharmonisch orkest in Europa dat uit 40 professionele Sinti en Roma muzikanten bestaat. Het orkest staat onder leiding van Riccardo M. Sahiti, zelf ook Rom en docent aan de Hogeschool der Kunsten in Frankfurt. De zangsolisten, koorzangers, de blaas- en slagwerkmusici komen uit de landen waar het Requiem zal worden uitgevoerd.
De première zal plaatsvinden op 2 augustus 2011 in Auschwitz zelf. Dit is de dag dat Roma en Sinti herdenken dat het ’Zigeunerlager’ in Auschwitz werd ontruimd: 2.900 Sinti en Roma werden in één nacht omgebracht. Hier zal ook een internationale conferentie over de thematiek van uitsluiting toen en nu worden gehouden. In de eerste helft van mei 2012 vindt de uitvoering plaats in de Nieuwe Kerk op de Dam. Verder zal het project worden uitgevoerd in Praag, Berlijn en Boedapest. Gesprekken met mogelijke partners in Slowakije, Roemenië en Spanje zijn gaande.

Het International Gipsy Festival Tilburg is de initiatiefnemer en heeft de algehele leiding en verantwoordelijkheid voor het project. In Tjsechië is het Khamoro World Roma Festival verantwoordelijk voor de uitvoering van het project, in Hongarije de Roma organisatie Romedia, in Polen de Associatie van Roma in Polen en in Duitsland de Central Rat Deutscher Sinti und Roma.

Uitvoering in Nederland
De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam stelt de ruimte en haar organisatie beschikbaar om het Requiem één of meerdere keren te laten uitvoeren. Het Groot Omroep Koor is benaderd om de koorpartijen te zingen. Het Roma en Sinti orkest uit Frankfurt komt met 40 strijkers; voor de blaas- en slagwerkpartijen en solisten worden Nederlandse musici benaderd.
Tussen de 8 delen van dit Requiem zullen Bekende Nederlanders die de stem van een specifieke slachtoffergroep vertolken korte teksten uitspreken en worden er beelden vertoond die onderstrepen dat het hier om alle slachtoffers van de nazi-vervolging gaat.
De mobiele tentoonstelling van de Roma en Sinti “De Holocaust tegen Roma en Sinti en het huidige racisme in Europa” samengesteld door het Documentatie en Cultureel Centrum van Duitse Sinti en Roma wordt in de Nieuwe Kerk geëxposeerd.
De mogelijkheid wordt onderzocht om op 4 mei 2012 tijdens de bijeenkomst in de Nieuwe Kerk, die voorafgaat aan de dodenherdenking op de Dam gedeeltes van het Requiem voor Auschwitz in kleinere bezetting uit te voeren.
De NOS wordt benaderd om de uitvoering integraal uit te zenden.
De organisatoren van de provinciale Bevrijdingsfestivals op 5 mei zullen benaderd worden om ook Roma en Sinti muziekgroepen uit te nodigen.
Er zullen films worden vertoond die ingaan op zowel de Roma en Sinti holocaust als op de uitsluiting die zij ook tegenwoordig in Europa ervaren.
Er zullen debatten worden georganiseerd om de oorzaken van de onwetendheid over de Roma en Sinti holocaust bloot te leggen en de onverschilligheid t.a.v. uitsluiting van Roma en Sinti in het huidige Europa aan te kaarten. Mogelijk worden hier ook onderwijsinstituten van middelbaar en hoger onderwijs in betrokken.
