Canadian film maker interviews Django interpreters at Gerwen

The Canadian Patrus loves wine and the music of Django Reinhardt. Since 2010 he has been filming musicians who perform Django’s gypsy jazz. That is how he landed in Gerwen, the delivery room of Dutch top guitar players in this genre. “This music is pure communication. You can feel it, you can hear it. Utterly beautiful what happens here”, says Patrus.

As soon as you enter the Sinti camp at Gerwen, the wind carries the sounds of guitars. Completed by double bass, accordeon and voices. Besides that, the scent of freshy roasted bacon, sausages and othe barbecue meat enters your nostrils. “Welcome. Have you eaten? Would you like a beer??” The reception between the caravans is most hospitable.
In the meantime the Paulus Schäfer Trio plays:
Paulus Schäfer – lead guitar
Romino Grünholz – rhythm guitar
Dominique Paats – accordeon
Noah Schäfer – double bass
The band is completed by vocalists. There is Roger Villevoye, who sings chansons in the local dialect of Maastricht. And we hear Christien van Helden interpreting ‘Summertime”. Netele Schäfer presents her rendition of an old German song, “Illusionen”. But the heroine of the night is little Gina Schäfer (9), Paulus’ daughter, who has eaten musicality for breakfast all her life. She scores a large round of applause for her song “Kale Jakka”.

YouTube
Sitting at the table Patrus films the musicians with a camera as well as with his mobile phone. The Canadian, a wine merchant by profession, is a fervent lover of Django Reinhardt’s music. This Belgian Sinti jazz guitar player earned himself a world reputation in a.o. the Hot Club de France. In 2010 his love for music brought Patrus to Samois, near Paris, where Reinhardt lies buried. Everybody who loves Gypsy jazz gets together there every year to celebrate a four-day festival.
Patrus had the idea to interview the musicians: very informally – glass of wine in hand, talking about the music. He does it out of love for the music, does not make any money with his videos. “Most often on YouTube you just see pure music films; I wanted to talk to the people directly, bring them closer to their audience”. That resulted in an impressive collection of videos. Sometimes a film scores more than 500 “hits”on one day, from all over the world. They can even be seen in China – secretly, because YouTube is forbidden there.

Patrus/Petrus
In Gerwen Patrus films and interviews various musicians. This Sinti community has mostly produced good guitar players and other instrumentalists, who have built themselves a solid world-wide reputation. How many of these interviews he has made in the meantime, he can not say.”Some of them did not want it publicized. But there are at least 160 films on YouTube now”, says Patrus. He operates under this name, won’t tell us his real name. His nickname Patrus is derived from Petrus, a superior wine with a superior price tag.

Pleasure
After an intermission it is the Feigeli Prisor Band’s turn to perform:
Feigeli Prisor – lead guitar
Sendelo Schäfer – rhythm guitar
Peter Krijnen – double bass
“Fabulous guitar player”, Patrus says admiringly about Feigeli. “Funny, he always looks so serious, but as soon as he starts playing, you see his smile break through and he sparkles with pleasure !”
Max O’ Rourke, an American eighteen-year-old who is traveling with Patrus, sits in the first row, right in front of the musicians. His family bought him a ticket for his graduation, so that he could join Patrus to Samois. They will stay in Gerwen for two days and then continue their trip to the Mecca of Gypsy jazz.

Special
As the Feigeli Prisor Band makes place again for the Paulus Schäfer Trio, Paulus invites Max to sit in. The American, who has been playing guitar since his sixth year, has followed a workshop with him. “Three years ago, in Massachusetts, during Django in June. After that, I did a workshop there every year and learned more. And look where this music has brought me. How special that I may be here, with these musical people. And that I’m going to Samois…” He smiles full of bliss.

Canadese filmmaker interviewt Gerwense vertolkers Django

Patrus/Petrus

Feigeli Prisor – sologitaar
Sendelo Schäfer – slaggitaar
Peter Krijnen – contrabas
“Geweldige gitarist”, zegt Patrus waarderend over Feigeli.

“Drie jaar geleden, in Massachusetts, tijdens Django in June.
