Paulus Schäfer Gipsy Band: Swing Jazz van absolute wereldklasse

Een familieaangelegenheid, want het laat zich raden dat Noah Schäfer (basgitaar) en Sendelo Schäfer (slaggitaar) familie van Paulus zijn. We kunnen spreken van een uniek muzikaal gezelschap. De Paulus Schäfer Gipsy Band brengt swingende jazz die zijn roots vindt in Django Reinhardt’s “Hot Club de France”, gipsy jazz dus maar met funky elementen daarin verweven!

Op 30 november jl. 2006. presenteerde Paulus Schäfer Gipsy Band hun tweede cd ‘Desert Fire’ in theater Het Klooster in Nuenen, de bakermat van de Nederlandse gipsy jazz-scene. Na het uitbrengen van hun tweede cd is er geen discussie meer mogelijk. Deze groep speelt een pakkende sound met enorme energie en met een uitgesproken persoonlijkheid, die niet de eenvoudigste is binnen dit muziekgenre.

Afkomstig uit de Nederlandse Sinti-gemeenschap hebben ze de technische virtuositeit en het zo karakteristieke geluid weten vast te houden. Het tempo ligt vaak hoog, maar staat altijd in proportie tot de arrangementen van de stukken en de virtuositeit van Paulus. Alles in zijn spel is luchtig en zuiver. De opbouw van zijn refreinen is altijd erg helder en logisch. Bijna elk stuk heeft zijn eigen verhaal. Als een combinatie van Stochelo Rosenberg en George Benson weet Paulus als geen ander te verdwalen in de Bebop en met zijn spel nieuwe horizonten te verkennen. Maar Paulus gitaarspel verklaart niet als enige het succes van deze band. Wat te denken van Sendelo Schäfer's boterzachte aanslag op rhythm-gitaar, ook zo kenmerkend voor de sound van deze band. Bassist Noah Schäfer is een groot muzikaal talent, die moeiteloos de snelste en meest complexe stukken speelt. Samen vormen zij de sterke ritmesectie van de band.

A family-matter, as you have probably guessed, Noah Schäfer (bass guitar) and Sendelo Schäfer (rhythm guitar) are family of Paulus Schäfer (solo guitar). We can speak of an unique combination of musicians. The Paulus Schäfer Gipsy Band is playing jazz which finds its roots in Django Reinhardt’s “Hot Club de France”, so gipsy jazz but mixed with funky elements!

Last November 30th their second cd ‘Desert Fire’ was presented at theatre ‘Het Klooster’ in Nuenen, the cradle of the Dutch gipsy jazz-scene. After their second album being a fact, more discussion isn’t possible anymore. This group is playing a catchy sound with enormous lots of energy and with strong individuality, which is not easy in this style of music.

Having their roots in the Dutch Sinti community they manage to keep the characteristic sound and mastery of the style. Their music is often up-tempo, but always justified by the arrangements and virtuosity of Paulus. Everything seems simple and limpid in his style. The construction of his improvisations are always very clear and evident. Almost each song tells its own tale. As a combination of Stochelo Rosenberg and George Benson, Paulus knows how to dabble with Bebop and open his playing towards other horizons. But not only Paulus guitar-playing justifies the success of this band. What to say about Sendelo Schäfer's butter-soft attack on his rhythm-guitar, even so characterising for the sound of this band. Noah Schäfer is a young and enormous musical talent who effortlessly supports the fastest and most complex rhythms. Together they form the strong rhythm section of this band.
